What to do when Senior Management won’t support Safety
You know what needs to be done but there is no way you can do it with your dwindling resources. You worry that as more and more corners are cut catastrophe looms. Just when you think that things can’t get any worse, word comes down from on high that the safety budget has been cut and your already anemic staff will sink so low that you honestly don’t believe you can do your job at a subsistence level; you are convinced that without executive intervention someone is ultimately going to die. You talk to your boss who is more worried about his resume than the safety of the workforce. Eventually you seek—and gain—an audience with the C+ executive with ultimate oversight. After stating your case dispassionately and logically, the empty suit in the corner office gives you a contemptuous look that he usually reserves for homeless pan handlers, trade unionists, and the mentally infirm and through a “come smack me” smirk tells you that you worry too much. “Maybe we’ll get lucky” he coos in faux condolence “and if not, we’ll just have to write a check”. You leave the office with the sick feeling that you just turned your career into a post-apocalyptic irradiated ruin and go to your cube and wait for the axe to fall.
