Asbestos awareness training to assess risk levels
If you come in to contact with asbestos products at work or elsewhere, you should consider completing one of the asbestos training courses available online. Asbestos training will allow you to assess and manage the risks involved.
If asbestos fibres are in a stable material such as bonded in asbestos-cement sheeting such as fibro and in good condition they pose little health risk. However where fibro or other bonded asbestos sheeting is broken, damaged or mishandled fibres can become loose and airborne posing a risk to health. Disturbing or removing it unsafely can create a hazard.
In materials such as pipe lagging and sprayed roof insulation asbestos fibres are not bound in a matrix. High concentrations of fibres are much more likely to be released into the atmosphere when these materials are disturbed or removed.
Non Friable Asbestos may be either
- Asbestos fibres bonded by cement, vinyl, resin or other similar material
- Material containing no more than 1% asbestos by weight
Where asbestos fibres are stable and bonded in good condition, there is little risk
Examples:
Ø AC Flat Sheet Products
Ø AC Corrugated Roofing
Ø AC pipes
Ø Vinyl floor tiles
Ø Compressed Sheet Products
Ø Shingles
Ø Switch board
Ø Brake and Clutch Linings
Friable Asbestos may be either
- Non-bonded asbestos fabric or material
- Material containing more than 1% asbestos by weight
- Asbestos in powder form or can be reduced to a powder by hand pressure when dry
When broken, damaged or mishandled, fibres become loose and airborne, creating a hazard. Asbestos training will get you familiar with these kinds of hazards.
Examples:
Ø Sprayed Fire Retardant
Ø Thermal Lagging
Ø Fire Blankets
Ø Welding Blankets
Ø Backing to sheet vinyl floor covering
