We should be licensed to have children
I was at the shopping centre yesterday when I saw a 2 year left unattended in a shopping trolley beside a balustrade with a 2 storey fall to the bottom of the atrium. I politely told the mother that it was probably a very unsafe thing to do – and didn’t she let me have it. Having copped similar flak when trying to correct a workplace safety hazard, I did what I do best and made up a story about a friend who had a child killed in a similar situation – I didn’t feel good about it but it quickly shut her up and she moved the trolley away from the edge.
Every high risk job or task we perform requires proper training and licensing, including driving a car. I even have to have my dog registered and licensed!. Yet, parenting is arguably one of the most important tasks in the world yet there are no prerequisites or approvals and children are only removed from harm under extreme circumstances and when the harm is already done and irreversible.
For a well thought out argument for the Licensing of Parents here is and article by someone a lot smarter than me.
